IPv6 on a Budget VPS: Enable It, Cut Latency, and Avoid NAT Headaches

  1. Confirm IPv6 is enabled on the kernel: sysctl net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 should return 0.
  2. Assign an address from your prefix, e.g. ip -6 addr add 2001:db8:1::2/64 dev eth0 (replace with your assigned prefix).
  3. Add the default route via your gateway, then ping6 google.com to confirm connectivity.
  4. Make it persistent — in netplan or /etc/network/interfaces, depending on your distribution.
  5. Point an AAAA record at the address in your DNS and verify with dig AAAA yourdomain.com.

Once AAAA works, visitors with IPv6 no longer translate through your provider’s NAT, and tools like curl -6 and mtr -6 let you trace the real path. If you run mail on the box, set the PTR record so the address resolves back cleanly — many receivers reject mail from IPv6 addresses without reverse DNS. The Cost Angle: When IPv6 Lowers Your Bill
