Two hosts can advertise the same \u201c2 TB transfer\u201d and behave completely differently when you approach the cap: one throttles your port speed, one bills you per gigabyte, and one suspends the server until renewal. The headline number is identical; the surprise bill is not. Bandwidth is the budget VPS specification that produces the most unexpected invoices, and the fix is not buying more bandwidth \u2014 it is understanding the enforcement model before<\/em> you sign up and monitoring the right metric after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Three Enforcement Models<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every VPS contract includes a monthly transfer allowance that resets on your billing date. Providers enforce that allowance in three different ways, and the mechanism determines what a \u201csurprise\u201d looks like \u2014 and what you should be watching in your dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The throttle model is the most common on budget plans because it protects the provider from runaway costs without invoicing you. The bill-per-GB model is the most dangerous for predictability \u2014 a busy week can quietly add $10\u2013$40 to an invoice. The suspend model is the most disruptive: no warning email survives a server that is offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fair-Use and \u201cUnlimited\u201d Fine Print<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnlimited\u201d bandwidth does not exist on a shared network port; what exists is a fair-use policy. Read the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) before buying, because it defines what counts as abusive: file-sharing archives, video streaming, cryptocurrency nodes, and torrents are the usual suspects. Providers phrase the limits as \u201creasonable use\u201d precisely so they can act without publishing a number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also reverse-engineer the real cap from the port speed. A server on a 100 Mbps port, saturated 24\/7, transfers about 32 TB per month in theory \u2014 but a fair-use policy will flag sustained saturation long before that. On a 1 Gbps port the theoretical maximum is ~324 TB\/month, which no budget plan will let you actually use. Treat port speed as a ceiling, not an allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Estimating Your Real Monthly Transfer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before you compare plans, compute what your workload actually pushes. A working estimate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Transfer \u2248 (average page size \u00d7 pageviews \u00d7 2) + backups + updates + API\/webhook traffic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The factor of 2 accounts for inbound requests and outbound responses. Worked example: a site with 100,000 pageviews\/month, 200 KB average page weight, 50 GB of offsite backups, and routine updates lands at roughly (100,000 \u00d7 0.2 MB \u00d7 2) = 40 GB, plus ~55 GB for backups and updates \u2014 about 95 GB total. That fits comfortably inside a 1 TB allowance, and it means the 1 TB vs 2 TB choice is irrelevant for this workload. Measure your own numbers with vnstat<\/code>, iftop<\/code>, or your provider’s dashboard before deciding what you need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
